Number of government new-builds falls by 90%

THE number of new government-funded homes available for social rent has fallen by 89 per cent since the Tories moved into No 10.

The number fell from 39,492 in 2009/10 across England to just 4,235 in 2017/18, government housing data published yesterday shows.

And two-thirds of those (2,826) are in London under Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Shadow housing secretary John Healey said: “A year since Theresa May admitted that the Conservatives haven’t given enough attention to social housing, it’s clear ministers are still not building the homes the country needs.

“After eight years of failure on housing, the Conservatives should back Labour’s long-term plan for a million new genuinely affordable homes.”

Labour recently revealed that ministers have raided the affordable homes budget to pay for replacing combustible cladding on tower blocks following Grenfell.

This suggests that the number of new builds this year will be much lower than previous years.
