Peru captain Guerrero banned for cocaine test

PERU captain Paolo Guerrero will miss the World Cup after Fifa banned him for one year for testing positive for cocaine.

The disciplinary committee-imposed suspension covers “all types of matches” and was backdated to start on November 3, Fifa said yesterday.

Guerrero tested positive for banned stimulant cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine after a World Cup qualifying game in Argentina on October 5.

He can appeal to Fifa — or failing that the Court of Arbitration in Sport — to overturn the ban

Guerrero was Peru’s joint top-scorer with five goals in qualifying as the team surged late in the South American group.

He missed Peru’s decisive intercontinental playoff win over New Zealand while sidelined during the case’s prosecution.

Peru were drawn last week in a World Cup group with France, Denmark and Australia.
