Ryedale mayor to challenge biz sec over control of fracking permission

A NORTH YORKSHIRE mayor launched legal action today against the government’s plans to deny councils’ their right to block fracking.

Malton Mayor Paul Andrews, who sits as an independent on Ryedale District Council, said he’s seeking a judicial review against Energy Secretary Greg Clark’s recent decision to change local planning laws to give central government more say.

Exploratory drilling is taking place at Kirby Misperton in Ryedale — residents have formed Frack Free Ryedale to oppose it.

Mr Andrews said: “Fracking will industrialise our beautiful countryside and destroy our rural economy and tourist businesses. Somebody has to stand up against the bullies in government and the greed of the oil and gas industry.

“This is about defending your property, your family’s health and your local democratic rights.”
