Mob killing of Sri Lankan man in Pakistan protested in both countries

THE mob killing of a Sri Lankan man accused of blasphemy in Pakistan has sparked protests in both countries after videos of the lynching was shared on social media.

Factory manager Priyantha Diyawadanage was beaten to death on Friday and his body set alight.

More than 100 people gave been arrested over the 48-year-old’s death so far, according to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Mr Khan has condemned the violence, describing it as a “day of shame” for his country.

Videos of the attack showed a crowd dragging Mr Diyawadanage out of his workplace in the city of Sialkot and beating him to death.

Several people in the crowd were seen taking selfies with his corpse as it burned.

The mob killing came after rumours spread that he had torn down posters bearing the name of Islam’s prophet Mohammed.

But a colleague told the Associated Press news agency that Mr Diyawadanage had removed the posters because the building was about to be cleaned.

Mr Diyawadanage’s wife told the BBC that she disputed the allegation against her husband, insisting that he was an innocent man.

“He was very much aware of the living conditions in Pakistan,” she said.

“It is a Muslim country. He knew what he should not do there and that’s how he managed to work there for 11 years.”

In Pakistan, anyone who insults Islam risks the death penalty.

The country’s laws prohibit disturbing a religious assembly, trespassing on burial grounds, insulting religious beliefs or intentionally destroying or defiling a place or an object of worship.

Mr Khan said that he was overseeing investigations into the attack, adding: “Let there be no mistake, all those responsible will be punished with the full severity of the law.”
