Sport in brief: August 8, 2022

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Rangers’ Champions League campaign is on the line this evening when they face Union Saint-Gilloise in the second leg of their third qualifying round tie.

The Belgians hold a 2-0 advantage from the first leg but lost 3-0 at Mechelen on Saturday.

Rangers will welcome back Alfredo Morales, who came on as a substitute for his first game of the season and scored in their 2-0 win over Kilmarnock.

 

WOMEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Leeds failed to take advantage of league leaders York City Knights’ inaction and missed the chance to move top of Super League group one on Sunday after losing out 30-22 to St Helens.

Wigan beat bottom club Huddersfield 42-4.

In group two, Warrington maintained their 100 per cent record with a 44-6 win over Featherstone, Bradford saw off Wakefield 26-0 and second-placed Barrow thumped Castleford 78-0.

 

MEN’S CRICKET: Ireland face Afghanistan in Belfast this afternoon for the first of their five-match Twenty20 international series.

Ireland are 15th in the ICC rankings, six places below the Afghans, who won their last three Twenty20 matches against Zimbabwe.

They have included spinner Rashid Khan, rated third-best bowler in the short game format, in their squad despite him currently appearing in the Hundred for the Trent Rockets. 

 

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Shamrock Rovers take a two-goal lead into tonight’s Europa League third qualifying round tie with FC Shkupi after beating the North Macedonians 3-1 last week.

The Dubliners top the League of Ireland by six points, while their Skopje-based rivals are yet to start their domestic season.

Linfield travel to FC Zurich on Thursday after suffering a 2-0 defeat in Belfast with Hearts awaiting the winners in the next round.

 

MEN’S FOOTBALL: The English Football League Cup kicks off this evening with Carlisle’s visit to Shrewsbury the prelude to 27 other matches.

Two clubs that have won the cup twice meet when Norwich host Birmingham, Stockport County return to the competition after an 11-year absence to face Harrogate and Preston, who reached the last 16 in 2021 before losing to current holders Liverpool, travel to Huddersfield.
