Scottish government confident remaining 14,000 WhatsApp messages will be handed over to Covid inquiry

THE SNP-Green Scottish government were confident that 14,000 remaining WhatsApp messages would be handed-over in time to the UK Covid-19 inquiry.

The Scottish government has come under mounting pressure over the last 10 days after it emerged that no messages involving ministers or officials had yet been made available to the inquiry.

The revelation, together with allegations that national clinical director Jason Leitch and former first minister Nicola Sturgeon had deleted messages potentially relevant to the inquiry, sparked a furious response from Margaret Waterton of Scottish Covid Bereaved, who branded the situation “shameful.”

The Scottish government had received a legal notice known as a Section 21 order permitting it to hand over the messages, including those from Scottish government ministers and former ministers, by today.

Well-being Economy Secretary Neil Gray was confident the deadline would be met, telling BBC Radio Sctoland: “Humza Yousaf, the First Minister, has confirmed he is going to be handing over all of his WhatsApp messages.

“Today, I fully expect we will be handing over 14,000, we’re not holding back here, we’re fully co-operating with these inquiries, we’ve got nothing to hide.”
