Sport in brief: October 1, 2024

MEN’S CRICKET: Ireland face South Africa for the first leg of their three match one-day series in Abu Dhabi tomorrow. The Irish are currently ranked as the world’s twelfth best 50 over team, nine places below South Africa. The teams recently drew their Twenty20 series, which was also held in the United Arab Emirates, after Ireland had gained their first ever short format victory over the Proteas.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: The English League Cup group stages kick off tomorrow evening with current Championship leaders Charlton taking their 100 per cent record into a London derby with the Super League’s Tottenham. Other fixtures include Liverpool visiting Manchester United, Newcastle hosting Everton and the Championship’s bottom club Portsmouth at West Ham. Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal have all been given byes to the quarter finals.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL: Quarter back Jared Goff completed all 18 of his passes to set a new NFL record on Tuesday morning as Detroit ended Seattle’s one hundred per cent record with a 42-29 defeat. Tuesday’s other game saw Tennessee end their losing run with a 31-12 win at Miami. Current Super Bowl Champions Kansas City top the AFC West after maintaining their perfect start to the new season with a 17-10 victory at the LA Chargers.

NETBALL: England face New Zealand in Porirua, just north of Wellington, tomorrow morning for the second match in their three-legged test match series. Liv Tchine shot 41 goals at 91 per cent accuracy as the Roses eked out a narrow 59-58 win over the world’s number two team in Auckland on Sunday. England also beat the Silver Ferns by one point when the teams last met at the Nations Cup back in January.
