SINN FEIN vice president Michelle O’Neill accused Theresa May and her Cabinet yesterday of being more focused on “internal negotiation” than on addressing the Irish border issue.
She warned that any return of a physical border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland after Brexit would be a security threat and have “serious” business implications.
And she hit out at the lack of progress on addressing the issue before the Prime Minister’s crunch meeting with her Cabinet at Chequers tomorrow.
Ms O’Neill told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that having yet to see plans to prevent a hard border has been the “the most disappointing thing throughout Brexit negotiations to date.”
She called for a special status for Northern Ireland which would see it remain in the single market and customs union.
At the Chequers meeting, Ms May will attempt to secure agreement on a future customs model aimed at addressing concerns over the Irish border and ports across Britain.
Ms O’Neill said the use of technology and trusted trader schemes, as proposed under the maximum facilitation model favoured by Cabinet Brexiteers, is “a bit of a pipe dream.”
