Champions Hilal Al-Quds opened their West Bank League campaign with a 1-0 loss at Ahli Al-Khalil (Hebron) on Saturday while Shabab Alsamu thumped Thaqafi Tulkarem 4-1 to claim top spot.
Promoted Shabab Al-Am’ari (Ramallah) beat Jabal Al-Mukaber (Al-Ram) 1-0, Shabab Al-Khaleel drew 1-1 with Markz Balata (Nablus), Taraji Wadi Al-Nes won 2-0 at Shabab Al-Dhahiriya and Al-Birah Institution saw off new-boys Markaz Tulkarm 2-0.
Northern Ireland
Linfield stayed top of the Irish Premiership on Saturday despite failing to score for the first time this season in their 0-0 draw with Ards.
Glenavon are second, one point behind, after coming from behind to draw 1-1 with Glentoran. Bottom club Warrenpoint were thumped 6-1 by Ballymena and are still without a point, Newry beat Cliftonville 1-0 and Dungannon drew 0-0 at Institute.
Champions Crusaders meet last season’s runners up Coleraine this evening.
Republic of Ireland
League of Ireland champions Cork City slipped six points off the top with just three games left this season after losing their first home league game of the season on Friday, 2-1 to Sligo.
Dundalk extended their lead with a narrow 1-0 win at struggling Limerick. Already relegated Bray’s miserable year continued with a 3-0 defeat to Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians won 2-0 in Derry and St Patrick’s thumped Waterford 3-0 to dent their Europa League hopes.
Asian Games
After a goalless 90 minutes, holders South Korea beat Japan 2-1 in extra time on Saturday to win gold at the Asian Games thanks to goals from Lee Seung Woo and Hwang Hee Chan.
Tottenham striker Son Heung Min, one of the three over-age players allowed in each squad, captained the South Koreans and their victory has secured his exemption from military service.
United Arab Emirates beat Vietnam after extra time and penalties to claim the bronze medal.
