Statement by Jeremy Corbyn on the Mexican election result

This election has seen a shocking 145 candidates and party workers killed with many more disappeared and unaccounted for and I thank the Morning Star for its coverage.

I am pleased that in spite of this violence and intimidation there was a high turnout.

I would like to thank the large number of volunteers from Britain who have been in Mexico as election observers, and this includes colleagues from Justice Mexico Now, Unite, GMB, TSSA, CWU and the NEU.

Amlo’s election is a reflection of people’s horror at the violence and corruption and the hope for a better and more equal country. I wish him well to bring justice to the mass of people in Mexico.

Mexico is a country I know well and I hope this election is a turning point in the fortunes of some of the poorest and most dispossessed people in the world.
