Thousands attend pro-independence rally in Scotland

THOUSANDS of people turned out at a rally for Scottish independence amid the fallout of the prosecution of ex-SNP chief executive Peter Murrell.

The Believe in Scotland march on Saturday went from Kelvin Way to George Square in Glasgow, accompanied by drummers and bagpipers.

About 2,000 people attended a rally which was addressed by First Minister of Scotland Humza Yousaf and also attended by Line Of Duty star Martin Compston.

Many demonstrators carried Palestinian flags and chanted: “Free, free Palestine.”

Mr Yousaf addressed the rally and referred to the arrest of Murrell, 59, the husband of former first minister Nicola Sturgeon.

He was charged with embezzlement on Thursday after a police investigation, Operation Branchform, which went on for more than a year.

Mr Yousaf said the past couple of days had been “tough” and “shocking” for those within the independence movement but said it was not finished as opponents had claimed.

Campaigners displayed painted stones and garden gnomes with pro-independence messages, with donations going to foodbanks.
