CONGRESS called for trades councils to work together with regional TUCs today to develop low-carbon regional strategies, building on the work of pioneers in the Yorkshire & Humber area.
Solutions include carbon capture and storage technology, new technology and promotion of recycling.
Trades councils conference delegate Gemma Offland said the movement should step up and help provide the training and education needed to ensure the low-carbon economy needed to stave off climate change does not come at the expense of much-needed good-quality jobs in industries such as steel, chemicals, glass and cement.
She spoke after Congress backed an amendment to the bakers’ union motion, which had called for a fracking ban and to “wholly decarbonise our economy by 2050,” calling instead for the government to “independently evaluate the risks fracking might cause local communities.”
Unison’s Paul Glover said his union did not support fracking, but whether its risks could be “managed by regulation, public ownership and scientific development” should be assessed before a total ban.
