UCU votes to strike in Hull colleges

STAFF members at three colleges in the north of England have voted overwhelmingly to strike and passed a vote of no confidence in their boss in calling for her resignation, their union revealed today.

Hull College Group wants to shed 231 jobs — one-third of the workforce — in Hull, Goole and Harrogate.

Members of the University and College Union (UCU) have voted by 79 per cent to strike, with the dates for strike action yet to be announced.

The union said the group’s chief executive Michelle Swithenbank’s position was now “untenable.”

UCU regional official Julie Kelley said: “Staff have made it quite clear that they have no confidence in Michelle Swithenbank’s leadership and want her to resign immediately.

“Staff need someone running the college who will talk it up and publicly defend its staff and students.

“The college should scrap damaging plans to cut jobs and courses and work with us to develop a more positive approach which meets the needs of local people.”
