TWO US envoys arrived in Qatar today for talks with mediators on an initial deal to end the war in Iran, but no meeting has been scheduled with Tehran, officials said.
The visit by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, follows a weekend of crossfire in the Gulf despite a ceasefire agreement.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said mediators were working to arrange talks with Iranian diplomats, who will arrive to discuss blocked assets.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said: “What will take place in Doha tomorrow is a discussion with the Qatari side about implementing parts of the memorandum of understanding, including the release of Iran’s blocked assets.”
A spokesman for the Qatari Foreign Ministry said the issue of frozen funds was directly linked to progress in negotiations.
He added that the $6 billion (£4.5bn) in frozen assets had not yet been transferred.
The US and Iran agreed an interim deal earlier this month, calling for Tehran to dilute its enriched uranium stockpile and waiving US-backed oil sanctions.
It also calls for free traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Hamas said a delegation has arrived in Cairo to meet Egyptian officials and mediators to finalise implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement with Israel.
Senior Hamas official Taher al-Nunu said the “delegation’s top priority is halting the escalating Israeli violations in the Gaza Strip, including the daily killings and assassinations, and ensuring the occupation’s commitment to allowing the entry of all the strip’s needs.”
These include “materials for the reconstruction of hospitals, bakeries, and infrastructure,” he said.
The Palestine Red Crescent Society has transported at least 30 patients from Gaza to the Rafah crossing for specialised medical treatment, the Palestinian news agency Wafa said. The World Health Organisation helped in the process.
