Voters want Burnham in Downing Street, polls reveal
10 in Downing Street in London, June 19, 2026

VOTERS want Sir Keir Starmer to quit in favour of Makerfield by-election victor Andy Burnham, new polling revealed.

The Ipsos survey showed two-thirds of the public, including two-thirds of Labour voters, do not want Sir Keir to lead Labour into the next general election, while more than half want him to stand down.

Just over a third feel that he should continue in Downing Street. Among those who have a view, Mr Burnham is the preferred replacement.

The former Greater Manchester mayor is seen as more likeable and in touch with ordinary people than Sir Keir and the public are clearer on what he stands for, with an understanding of the problems facing Britain.

On a list of Labour politicians he easily led the field as to who would make the best prime minister. Main rival Wes Streeting was backed by just 1 per cent.
