Afghan hospital hit by rocket fire destroying covid-19 vaccines

A HOSPITAL in Afghanistan was hit by rocket fire in a suspected Taliban attack today, setting the medical facility on fire and destroying Covid-19 vaccines.

Government officials said that there were no reports of casualties in the attack on the hospital in the eastern province of Kunar.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid denied responsibility.

Kunar health official Aziz Safai said that different types of vaccines, including doses to fight polio and Covid-19, were destroyed.

Afghanistan has reported 4,366 Covid-19 deaths and 107,957 cases as of today.

Earlier in northern Afghanistan, the Taliban captured the town of Shir Khan Bandar forcing security forces to flee to safety over the border into Tajikistan.

The loss of the trading town will be a blow to the government, but the Taliban said that all commercial import and export will continue to function as they called on the government to embrace the Islamic emirate.

Fighting between government forces and the Taliban has surged in recent weeks, with the militants gaining control of more territory as the last US-led forces prepare to leave after 20 years of military occupation.
