Imran Khan slams India over evidence 2019 air strike was publicity stunt

PAKISTANI Prime Minister Imran Khan has condemned an “unholy nexus” between the Indian government and media after leaked text messages suggested a 2019 air raid on Pakistan was a publicity stunt.

Mr Khan slammed “dangerous military adventurism” that risked “destabilising the entire region … to win an election.”

India bombed a wooded area in Bakalot, Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, on February 26 2019, claiming to have killed a “large number of terrorists.”

Pakistan retaliated the next day, shooting down an Indian warplane and capturing its pilot, who was returned to India within a few days.

The incident was the first time the Indian air force crossed the line of control in the disputed Kashmir region since 1971.

Leaked WhatsApp messages between Indian TV anchor Arnab Goswami and TV rating company official Partho Dasgupta from three days earlier indicate that Mr Goswami had prior knowledge of the attack, saying: “On Pakistan the government is confident of striking in a way that people will be elated.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was re-elected in April 2019.
