Man ordered to pay wife for years of housework in landmark Chinese divorce settlement

A MAN has been ordered to compensate his wife for the housework done during their marriage in a landmark Beijing divorce case.

Mr Chen, identified only by his surname, was told to pay 50,000 yuan (£5,500) for five years of unpaid labour to Ms Wang, also identified only by her surname (women do not take their husband’s surnames in China).

Ms Wang had told the court that Mr Chen did not do his fair share of housework or take responsibility for raising their child. She has also been awarded 2,000 yuan in monthly alimony from Mr Chen.

The judge said courts had previously only split tangible property between divorcing couples but “housework constitutes intangible property value.”

The ruling reflects China’s new civil code, implemented this year, which expands the grounds for compensation in divorce cases to include support with work, childcare or caring for elderly relatives.
