Moscow’s top priority to get arms control treaties back on track, says Lavrov

MOSCOW is ready for a quick deal with the Joe Biden administration to salvage the last remaining arms control treaty between the US and Russia, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said today.

President Donald Trump’s negotiators have not reached any agreement with Russia on extending the New Start (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) on reducing nuclear stockpiles, which is due to expire on February 5.

The US walked away from the Intermediate Nuclear Forces treaty, which banned medium-range missiles, in 2019 and also tore up the Open Skies accord allowing aircraft to fly over each other’s territory.

Mr Lavrov said Moscow’s “most important priority is the absolutely abnormal situation in the sphere of arms control” and that he welcomed signals from Mr Biden’s team that they were keen to resume talks as a matter of urgency.

Russia says it is happy to extend the current treaty with no alterations.

The US and Russia have by far the world’s biggest nuclear arsenals with about 6,000 warheads each, 90 per cent of the global total.
