Three Palestinians arrested during Ramadan raids

ISRAELI soldiers detained three people in raids across the occupied West Bank today as Muslims began observing the holy month of Ramadan.

Local sources told the Palestinian Wafa News Agency that troops “barged their way into al-Bireh city” in Ramallah, where they arrested and assaulted a doctor.

A Palestinian man was detained in east Jerusalem after police broke into his house, while another arrest was made by Israeli troops in the Jordan Valley, human rights activist Aref Daraghmeh said.

Palestinian homes are raided on a daily basis across the West Bank on the pretext of searching for wanted people. Sweeping and arbitrary powers granted to the military mean that no search warrants are required.

Israeli army commanders have full executive, legislative and judicial authority over the West Bank’s three million Palestinian residents, who have no say in how this authority is exercised.

Today’s raids came after the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestine, Mohammad Hussein, declared the start of the holy month.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, in a message to regional leaders, expressed hope that the next Ramadan “will bring future progress and prosperity and the realisation of the future aspirations of the Arab nations.”
