MALI: The foreign minister accused the country’s former colonial power France of colluding with the Islamist extremists it has spent nearly a decade fighting against.

The French government denied the allegation, which was made in a letter to the United Nations security council.

The last French troops from Operation Barkhane left Mali on Monday after relations sharply deteriorated with the junta leader who seized power two years ago.

NIGERIA: Power was restored yesterday after a nationwide blackout caused by industrial action by electricity workers over pay and welfare issues.

The National Union of Electricity Employees called off the strike after a meeting with the government, but it threatened to resume action in two weeks if its demands are not addressed.

MOROCCO: A court sentenced 13 migrants, mostly from Sudan, to two-and-a-half years in prison over a mass attempt to scale the border fence separating the country from the Spanish enclave of Melilla.

Dozens of people were arrested in June for attempting to enter Melilla illegally and at least 23 died in what Moroccan authorities called a stampede.

STORMS: Extreme weather killed more than 100 people across the world yesterday.

Nearly 80 people died and 14,500 homes were destroyed by seasonal downpours and floods in Sudan, while a sudden rainstorm in western China triggered a landslide and flash flood, killing at least 16 people and leaving 18 missing.

A violent thunderstorm hit the French island of Corsica and Italy, killing seven people, including a 13-year-old girl. In eastern Algeria, wildfires left 26 people dead.
