BRITISH support for Israel risks never-ending war, left campaigners warned as Foreign Secretary David Lammy travelled to Geneva for talks with his Iranian counterpart and European allies today.
Mr Lammy was due to discuss a diplomatic solution to the Israel-Iran conflict with Abbas Araghchi before US President Donald Trump decides on whether to take military action against Tehran.
It follows his meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the White House on Thursday evening to discuss “how a deal could avoid a deepening conflict.”
A spokeswoman for Momentum said: “Any conflict with Iran would not only be a disaster militarily, dragging the UK into another never-ending war, but would be a huge political and moral failure for this Labour government.
“To prevent this, the UK must stop treating Israel as an ally by ending all arms sales.”
A spokeswoman for Stop the War said: “Lammy and [Prime Minister Sir Keir] Starmer should be going to The Hague, not Geneva, for the war crimes they are complicit in.”
Tomorrow’s national march for Palestine in London will call for an end to the war in Iran as well as Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
With Labour Friends of Israel pushing for a “fresh, tough approach” to Iran, Iranians for Palestine UK fumed that “Western hypocrisy knows no bounds” for arming and allowing Israel to continue to act with impunity.
Mr Lammy said: “The situation in the Middle East remains perilous. We are determined that Iran must never have a nuclear weapon.”
Attorney-general Lord Hermer is reported to have raised legal concerns about any British involvement in the conflict beyond defending its allies.
LINDA PENTZ GUNTER reports from London’s massive demonstration, where Iranian flags joined Palestinian banners and protesters warned of the dangers of escalation by the US, only hours before a fresh phase of the war began
Meanwhile, over 110 human rights organisations and trade unions demand the EU immediately suspend its trade agreement with Israel over its ‘egregious human rights abuses against Palestinians’
Trump has changed his tune from the deal-making peace-bringer and is now gearing up to attack Iran. We must take to the streets to keep Britain out of this new madness and all of Israel and the US’s wars, writes LINDSEY GERMAN
