Welsh leeks gain protected geographical status

THE national emblem of Wales is the leek and today it gained protected geographical status.

The UK food and drink protection scheme was established in 2021 after withdrawal from the European Union and it ensures selected food and drinks continue to receive legal protection against imitation and misuse.

Welsh leeks will now be sold with the UK GI logo which promotes the heritage and culture of Wales and provides consumers with certification of quality and uniqueness.

The Senedd’s Minister for Rural Affairs Lesley Griffiths said: “Leeks are a historic symbol of Wales, known across the world, and I’m very pleased to see this product gain the recognition and prestige it deserves.”

Welsh leeks are grown and harvested in Wales and are a product of several hybrid varieties.

The leek now becomes the third new Welsh product to achieve protected status, joining Gower salt marsh lamb and Cambrian mountain lamb.
