WIGAN players will step up their efforts to send popular coach Shaun Wane out on a high, starting with the trip to Hull KR tonight.

Former England forward Liam Farrell, who has been coached by Wane since he was 15, admits the players were caught unawares on Monday by his decision to leave the club at the end of the year but says that, after soaking up the news, they were quickly back down to business.

“It was a shock but we’ve got to try and put it to the back of our minds,” Farrell said.

“We’ve a long way through the year to go yet. The one thing we’ve spoken about already is not letting the emotion come into it.

“We’re all paid to do a job at this club and we have to put this to one side and focus on what we have to do. We’ve a chance to win a lot of things yet.

“Waney will put 100 per cent like he does in every day and we’ve got to follow that.”

Wigan have won their last eight matches, including a 28-10 Challenge Cup triumph over Rovers at Craven Park a fortnight ago, to maintain their hopes of completing the double.

“We’re in a good place at the moment,” Farrell said. “Everyone is performing pretty well as a team.”

The Warriors will take on the bottom club in the Super League on a high following their 38-10 destruction of third-placed Warrington, who will seek to bounce back when they host Hull tonight.

It was the Wolves’ first defeat in 11 league and cup matches and second rower Harvey Livett, who on Wednesday signed a two-year contract extension, said: “It was a tough loss against Wigan and a difficult defeat to take.

“We would have liked to have got the win but we’re focused now on putting it right this week against Hull and hopefully climbing back up the table.

“They’re going through an injury crisis but at the same time are going into the game off the back of a good win in the Hull derby at Magic Weekend so will be full of confidence.

“They’ve got a really strong team and we won’t be taking them for granted. We’ve done our work on them this week and hopefully can get the job done.”

The focus is on Super League’s bottom four in tonight’s other games.

Huddersfield, who hope to welcome back skipper Leroy Cudjoe from a nine-month injury lay-off, can move into the top eight for the first time this year at the expense of Salford if they win at Stadium Way.

The Giants have won their last three matches under interim coach Chris Thorman, who remains in charge as the club await the arrival of new Australian boss Simon Woolford.

Widnes will seek to end a seven-match losing run when they host Wakefield, who have won just two of their last 10 league games.
