World in brief: April 4, 2024

NATO: The US-led alliance marked its 75th birthday today, with its top diplomats vowing to stay the course in Ukraine as Russian troops assert control on the battlefield.

The anniversary comes as the now-32-nation group considers how to provide regular, long-term military support to Ukraine.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba thanked Nato for agreeing to begin identifying Patriot missile battery stocks that could be sent to Ukraine.

TAIWAN: Rescuers continued to search for missing people and worked to reach hundreds still stranded today following Wednesday's earthquake, the strongest in 25 years.

Nearly 1,070 people were injured, and of the 10 deaths, at least four were killed inside Taroko National Park.

Hundreds of people were stranded there when rocks and mud blocked the roads leading to their hotel, camp ground or work site, though most were safe while they awaited rescue.

CANADA: Plans were under way today to airlift a stranded killer whale calf out of a remote tidal lagoon off northern Vancouver Island.

Canadian Fisheries Department and First Nations officials said the plan involves placing the two-year-old calf into a sling, lifting it out of the lagoon by helicopter and putting it in a pen in the ocean while they wait for its family pod to be near before release.

EL SALVADOR: At least 241 people have died in prisons since the start of President Nayib Bukele's “war on gangs” two years ago, according to Humanitarian Legal Relief.

Ingrid Escobar, director of the rights organisation, said they received 500 reports of deaths in state custody, but they have confirmed about half, including two minors.

Last year, the organisation documented 126 deaths, just half of the number they documented this year.
