DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO: Health workers at Bunia General Hospital, the region’s largest health facility, went on strike today and barricaded the entrance, becoming the latest group to have walked out over non-payment of compensation for working in difficult conditions.

The World Health Organisation says more than 100 healthcare workers have been infected since the start of the outbreak.

Government data showed the number of confirmed cases of Ebola reaching 2,011, including 754 deaths, making the fastest-growing outbreak on record.

KENYA: The High Court dismissed a petition today that sought to legalise the use of cannabis by Rastafarians for religious purposes.

Justice Bahati Mwamuye said that Kenya’s laws prohibiting the cultivation and use of marijuana do not violate Rastafarians’ right to freedom of religion.

The petitioners’ lawyer, Shadrack Wambui, vowed to take the case to the Court of Appeal.

GIBRALTAR: Thousands of people who travel every day between the British territory and the southern tip of Spain no longer have to cross a physical border, starting from midnight on Tuesday.

Gibraltar’s border fence was removed under after years of post-Brexit negotiations resulted in a treaty between Britain and the European Union.

CHINA: The economy slowed sharply to a 4.3 per cent annualised rate of growth in the second quarter, the government said today, its weakest performance in over three years.

The data fell short of forecasts and was far below the 5 per cent growth in the first quarter of 2026, despite a surge in exports driven partly by the artificial intelligence boom and by robust global demand for Chinese electric vehicles.
