Iranian students defy ultimatum to end protests

STUDENTS have defied an ultimatum by the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to end their protests.

Hossein Salami had issued a chilling warning to protesters that Saturday must be the “last day” of protest.

He added: “Do not come to the street. Today is the last day of the riots.”

But students were back out on the streets across the country on Sunday only to be met with tear gas, beatings and gunfire from Iranian authorities.

One unverifiable social media video showed Iranian authorities shooting at students from close range at Azad University in Tehran.

Footage from other universities across the country also showed students being shot at.

This comes amid continuing protests across Iran which were sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini at the hands of the country’s so-called morality police.

According to the Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights, at least 270 people have been killed and more than 14,000 have been arrested during the protests.

Human rights group Hengaw reported one female student was critically wounded as security forces shot at protesters at the Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences in Sanandaj.

Security forces are alleged to have raided a student dormitory as well as a hospital. Activists have also alleged to have killed at least two people on Friday in the city of Zahedan during the harsh clampdown.

The trial of five people charged over the protests for offences that can carry the death penalty opened on Saturday in Tehran, according to the judiciary’s news website.

One is accused of “attacking police with a car,” killing an officer and injuring five others in the process, Mizan Online said.

Iranian authorities have repeatedly claimed without evidence that foreign powers are behind the protests.

As the Morning Star went to print there was no further news on any casualties from the latest confrontation.
