Web Assistant, The Morning Star

Responsible to: Web Editor
Based: Remote

Salary: Starting at £29,062.27 rising to £29,562.27 subject to 6-month probationary period

Job purpose: To help manage the presentation of the Morning Star’s online content, direct the promotion of the Morning Star on social media and, with the web editor, editor and other senior staff, develop a social media strategy; with the rest of the team to grow online visits, promote Morning Star campaigns and develop web-based income streams.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

  • Ensure Online content is web-optimised, writing headlines for online use and responsible for placement of articles and selection of accompanying images
  • Responsible for timing of online publication of articles, in line with guidelines and as advised by the web editor and editor of the day.
  • Promoting Morning Star content via social media sites in accordance with the paper’s social media strategy.
  • Assist with development of the website, helping implement changes as decided by Morning Star management.
  • Keep abreast of developments on competitors’ websites and in the wider sphere of web design and user-end functionality and advertise the editor on the maintenance and development of the website.
  • Co-ordinate relations with the website’s external service providers.
  • Work with the papers’ editorial and business teams to promote causes, campaigns and events as approved by the editor.

Specific Job Skills

  • A good grasp of the requirements needed to present content efficiently for SEO purposes
  • Experience with the general text and photographic editing techniques required within an editorial news environment
  • Familiarity with the use of social media and other similar mediums in the promotion of content
  • Able to work successfully and efficiently to deadlines
  • Experience in a customer service environment

Computer skills

  • Practical knowledge of CMS systems
  • Experience with bulk email and tailored mailing list software
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite and/or similar systems
  • Experience with computer programming and web design software such as Drupal

Literacy and numeracy

  • Excellent written English
  • A knowledge of news English
  • Strong copy-editing skills
