THREE bangs followed by furious voices emanated from the polling station in the classroom adjacent to ours. My heart pummelled against my rib cage.

The people who waited impatiently outside the polling station to bring to an end Mexico’s bloodiest ever election looked through the classroom window at Alberto Zerda-Noriega and I in our white electoral observation bibs with concern.
