Industrial Refuse workers end strikes with new deal

A DISPUTE between refuse workers and council management in Hertfordshire has been settled after the workers accepted a revised deal.

Forty drivers and loaders working for Dacorum Borough Council have accepted the deal, which has stopped a proposed reduction in redundancy payments.

The dispute, which has meant delays in dustbin collections, has been settled by Unite representatives and council management in discussions that took place on May 1.

The workers have returned to work and Unite regional officer Richard Gates congratulated members yesterday who supported the industrial action.

He said: “It is hoped that in future the council will negotiate with the union before imposing any changes to our members’ terms and conditions. This would stop any similar disputes escalating into industrial action.”

The agreement is likely to be approved by the council cabinet on May 22 and by the full council on July 11.
