NHS staff welcome end to Weston health trust privatisation plan

NHS workers were celebrating yesterday following Weston general hospital bosses’ decision to scrap controversial plans to privatise the health trust.

Health union Unison head of health Christina McAnea welcomed the news that Weston Area Health Trust in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, would opt for an NHS-only hospital.

She said: “The last two years have created a lot of uncertainties and anxieties but this decision means that staff can continue focusing on delivering high-quality patient care rather than worrying about whether they are going to be outsourced.”

Now the hospital will merge with a neighbouring NHS trust.

It follows a similar victory at George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, which dodged plans of a private takeover in March after making “significant improvements” to its finances.
