Refugees camp out on Israel-Egypt border

ABOUT 1,000 Eritrean and Sudanese refugees set up camp on the Israel-Egypt border today, pleading with the UN to settle them in another country.

“We cannot continue living in a cage in the desert, with no release date and no judicial review,” they said in a statement.

The refugees marched out of the "open" Holot detention centre in the Negev desert on Friday in protest at their treatment by Israel.

They began squatting at the border after Israeli troops prevented them from crossing into Egypt, accusing them of approaching an area restricted for security reasons.

They complained that Israel has not processed their claims for asylum.

About 50,000 Africans have entered Israel in recent years fleeing persecution and danger, but Tel Aviv accuses many of being economic migrants.

It offers cash to migrants to return home, asks other countries to take them and jails refugees who reject the “invitation” to stay in Holot while their claims are processed.
