News in brief: Scotland - 14th April, 2021

ELECTIONS: The Scottish Refugee Council is urging all refugees in Scotland to register to vote before Monday night’s deadline.

People with refugee status will be able to vote in Scottish Parliament elections for the first time on May 6, though those still awaiting decisions on their asylum claims remain unable to vote.

The move also affects 2022’s council elections, with campaigners saying that everyone “should have a say” in how decisions are made.

GAELIC: The SNP has announced plans to keep Scotland’s Gaelic tradition at the cultural forefront.

Proposals included in its forthcoming manifesto include greater funding for Gaelic schools, reforming the Bord na Gaidhlig and the creation of recognised “Gaidhealtachd” (Gaelic-speaking areas).

The SNP looks set to remain as the largest party in Holyrood after the May 6 elections.

LABOUR/SNP: Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has outlined his party’s pledge to help every person aged 75 and over in Scotland pay their TV licence.

Mr Sarwar, who has pledged to act as a “better opposition” to the SNP after May, would save the free licence benefit after the Tories broke their promise to the country’s older people at UK level.

Meanwhile, the SNP has called for school music tuition fees to be scrapped – a move backed by teaching unions.

DEBATE: Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross was forced to reiterate an apology to one of Britain’s most persecuted groups during the STV leaders’ debate on Tuesday night.

Green co-leader Patrick Harvie asked Mr Ross: “Is it your whole party that is prejudiced against ‘Gypsy Travellers’ or just you?”

Mr Ross said he had already apologised for remarks he made in 2017, in which he said he would take tougher action on “Gypsy Travellers” were he made PM for the day.
