Economy and NHS are main issues worrying votes, survey finds

THE economy is the main issue worrying the electorate, followed by the state of the NHS, according to the latest survey of voters’ concerns.

Inflation, immigration and housing also scored highly in the poll conducted by Ipsos, with concerns about housing rising sharply.

Defence and foreign affairs ranked a lowly ninth among issues, despite both government and Labour committing to huge rises in military spending and putting the country on a “war footing.”

Brexit has, unsurprisingly, fallen to its lowest ranking among electoral concerns for 10 years.

The figures suggest that the general election, due later this year, will be fought primarily over the economy and public services, which is bad news for a Tory government obliged to defend 14 years of austerity and stagnant living standards.

Gideon Skinner, Ipsos head of politics research, said: “The economy and public services are likely to remain at the forefront of voters’ minds over the coming months, suggesting that they will be critical factors as we approach the election.”
