Star Covid-19 fundraising appeal

You’ve raised: £30,862. We need: £59,138 by the end of August

My latest postbag of £3,629 brings us one third of the way towards our £90,000 target. But with just six weeks left to ensure the survival of the Morning Star, we have no time to lose.

Among the donations was £200 from our trusty woodturner from Sheffield, who has “been busy turning during lockdown.”

And they weren’t the only one spinning for socialism. On July 29, the Pedal4Progress cyclists will set out from Manchester on their 8th annual tour to raise money for your paper.

This year’s ride will be a celebration of the life and times of the legendary communist leader Harry Pollitt, and what better way to honour his memory than by helping us keep the printing presses turning? Please mark your donation “P4P8” and I’ll do a special round-up of sponsors in my next column.

From Birmingham, a reader who “couldn’t manage” without her daily socialist miracle sent £200. Thanks also to the reader from Newport who gave £20, and to the supporter in Leighton Buzzard who sent £50.

Newcastle TUC and Great Yarmouth Trades Council led the way for the trade-union movement, sending £100 and £50 respectively.

If you’re attending a union meeting this month, please pass the hat around for the only daily paper that supports the labour movement.

The Shrewsbury 24 Campaign sent £50 for our “wonderful support” of their decades-long campaign for justice for the jailed building workers.

And the Shropshire Readers’ and Supporters’ Group sent their second instalment of £310 towards the £1,000 they’ve pledged, and more is on the way from other supporters' groups.

We know that times are hard for many of our readers. But times will be harder still if our red star ceases to shine. So please give whatever you can afford to keep our socialist voice alive.
