FURTHER education tutors were joined by UCU general secretary Jo Grady and a constellation of trade union leaders calling for a Yes vote in the union’s strike ballot today.
The UCU rally at the Big Wheel on Liverpool’s Albert Dock saw activists stress the need to get the vote out to challenge college bosses who have refused to propose a pay rise for 2023-24.
“If you have voted that’s not the end of your get out the vote activities — you need to speak to 10 colleagues to make sure that they don’t just walk past that ballot on the kitchen counter, they vote,” Ms Grady urged.
Other leaders pointed to the crucial role of further education as the only route for working-class people into many careers dominated by the moneyed class, from acting to journalism.
“Most of our members send their children to FE colleges,” Unison general secretary Christina McAnea said. “Most of the Tory politicians and journalists don’t even know what FE is. So it’s really important that we get approval for further education.”
