Two in three teachers working under leaking roofs, poll finds

TWO in three teachers work in buildings with leaking roofs, a survey has found.

One in 10 described it as a “severe issue,” the poll said.

A third of teachers also warned pupils are being taught in severely overheated conditions.

Meanwhile one in six said their workplace generates severely cold working conditions.

Just under six in 10 of the more than 8,000 National Education Union (NEU) members polled said the facilities issues “negatively impact the learning environment for their students.”

The findings were released during the union’s annual conference today.

General secretary Daniel Kebede said: “There are limits to a culture of ‘make do and mend,’ and the line that should not be crossed is when it comes to our nation’s children.

“The fact is that this government has neglected school and college buildings for 14 years.

“At the present rate of 50 schools per year, the government’s School Rebuilding Programme will take 460 years to complete its work. That is many more generations of children to fail.”
