Unite welcomes London mayor’s pledge to stop bus drivers from working in ‘unacceptable’ conditions
CABIN FEVER: London Mayor Sadiq Khan has called on bus operators to not make their drivers work in boiling hot cabins
UNITE has welcomed Sir Sadiq Khan’s promise to ensure bus drivers are not working in “unacceptable” high temperatures.
The mayor of London today said TFL staff “must not be driving that bus” if their cabin is too hot.
“I don’t want any bus driver to work in conditions that are unacceptable in London in 2026,” Sir Sadiq said on LBC, adding that he has “given TFL permission, and told the bus operators” to allow staff not to drive if their bus is too hot.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Sadiq Khan has said the right thing here. It is totally unacceptable for any bus driver to be put at risk due to high temperatures.”
She demanded that “bus operators listen to him and ensure that their workers and passengers are safe.”
Regional officer Nadine Edwards said this pledge represented “some reassurances” for staff, but demanded “long-term solutions to end the misery and danger bus drivers are facing.”
