ANTI-WAR campaigners in Britain have called on the public to mobilise against the US and Israel’s “illegal” war in the Middle East ahead of a global peace conference.
The International Conference Against War on June 20 in London will hear from dozens of campaigners, trade unionists, academics and experts to “raise the alarm” and create a “network which will organise for peace, oppose the revitalised US imperial project and fight for the livelihood” of working people.
It comes as US President Donald Trump was rebuked by the House of Representatives, which voted to approve a war powers resolution that would halt military action against Iran, as reported in the Morning Star today.
Stop the War convener Lindsey German said the vote “shows even Trump’s own Republicans are opposed to his illegal war in Iran,” adding: “They don’t trust the president, and they also know how unpopular the war is and that he is losing it.
“But to stop Trump we need a mass, international mobilisation, which is why the International Anti-War conference in London on June 20 is so critical as a starting point for action and for building an international movement for peace.
“Everyone who is anti-war and pro-peace should be there.”
Your Party leader Jeremy Corbyn echoed the call, saying it has “never been more important to organise for peace.”
“Earlier this year, I tabled a Bill that would require parliamentary approval for the use of UK bases in strikes against Iran,” he said. “The government refused.
“Even a Republican-controlled House of Representatives has now passed similar legislation in the United States.
“Starmer can say what he likes: Britain is involved in yet another illegal, catastrophic war.”
