Clyde shipyard workers strike against two-tier workforce
ACTION: e under-construction City Class Type 26 frigate HMS Glasgow at BAE Systems Scotstoun, in Glasgow, Scotland

GMB shipyard workers on the Upper Clyde have launched strike action after rejecting a pay offer which embeds a two-tier workforce on BAE sites.

Workers employed by GXO Logistics supplying tools, materials and equipment for BAE Systems shipyards at Govan and Scotstoun overwhelmingly rejected a three-year pay offer amounting to 3.5 per cent this year and three per cent in the following two.

Not only does the offer fall short of expectations amid a cost-of-living crisis, workers and their union argue that actively widens the pay gap with their directly employed colleagues by falling short of BAE’s settlement with its staff.

Warning the strikes could further delay delivery of HMS Glasgow, the first of eight Type 26 frigates being built for the Royal Navy, GMB Scotland’s Rory Steel said: “The work of these shipyards is built on the experience, expertise and commitment of our members.

“GXO management must understand their determination to ensure their role is properly recognised and fairly rewarded.

“Our members can’t accept being underpaid for the work they do.

“Management must ensure the long-standing pay gaps between GXO colleagues and BAE workers is first calculated and then closed.

“How can colleagues, working beside each other in similar roles of similar value, be paid differently?

“BAE Systems brought GXO in to cut costs but our members are not prepared to accept wages below their worth.

“This is not only about pay but fairness and respect and needs to be addressed with urgency.”

A BAE Systems spokesperson said: “This is a matter for GXO Logistics and its workforce.

“We have made temporary arrangements to minimise any impact to our activities from the strike action.”

GXO Logistics was contacted for comment.
